Royal Dornoch is another of those most famous Scottish courses which is a must if you are on a golf tour of Scotland. This is a classic links course with spectacular views of the sea from every hole, strung along embo bay the course has been played since 1616 almost as old as Leith and the old course at St Andrews are older. If your up for a challenge then this is the one for you with another splendid time to be had at the
Dornoch Castle Hotel, Steeped in Scottish history and fascinating legends, the 15th century castle stands in its grounds opposite the inspiring
12th century Dornoch Cathedral.
If the Castle life is not for you then don't worry you can also stay at the first tee in the Swallow Royal Golf Hotel in Dornoch, where the last thing you see at night and the first thing you see in the morning, is the challenging 18 hole course. For the non golfer there are lots of other activities to pass the time with fishing, shooting, hill walking and much more.
Turnberry is a favourite with many visitors to Scotland, 50 miles southwest of the city of Glasgow the course sits on a headland looking out across the Firth of Clyde towards Ireland. The Ailsa and Arran courses have a checkered history, having been dug up during both world wars to make way for airfields, they now, thankfully, only receive minor remodeling by the fairway play of some of the visitors. The views are spectacular with Ailsa Craig rising out of the water in the sea channel between Scotland and Ireland and to the northeast you will be silhouetted against the mountains of the Isle of Arran.
Royal Troon is one of the best of the Ayrshire coasts golf courses, which although short on number make up for it in quality and challenge, even the worlds greatest players can run foul of the monstrous 6th par 5 which is 577yd's, the longest hole in Open Championship golf at present and again on the 8th hole, a par 3 known as the postage stamp, which catches the unwary with the fearsome deep bunkers surrounding what is said to be one of the smallest greens in championship golf. You would be forgiven for noticing the wonderful coastal surroundings, with the scenery at it's breathtaking best in the summer months.
